Margaret Weis receives the Gary Gygax Lifetime Achievement Award @ GaryCon X

Margaret Weis received the honor of being named the recipient of the Gary Gygax Lifetime Achievement Award from GaryCon for her oustanding contributions to gaming and TSR with Dragonlance, and her other Fantasy works and writings which brought TSR enhanced professional and literary acclaim! Congratulations!, Margaret. Well Done!

Attendance skyrocketed from just over 1,700 in 2017 to over 2,200 for the show this year. Many of the pre-registered games were booked solid this year, and off-grid pickup games could be found in just about every hall, …and every venue, I’ll get more in-depth on this with a later article after I meet one of my other work deadlines this week.

The resort seems to be already fully booked for GaryCon XI 2019. On Sunday, even the dealer halls was just about fully booked for 2019 as well. If you just happen to be a vendor, …and you want a table, …you better see to arranging for getting a booth as soon as possible!

The GaryCon Charity Auction generated well over $10,000 this year for the Wounded Warrior project to help American veterans adjust and rehabilitate from the trials of their combat tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, & Africa, and really …while they are in service anywhere in world.

Now a special shout out to PAIZO and JASON BULMAHN for donating a super significant portion of their table event ticket sales proceeds this year, (might have been all of it, actually…) as when I left on Sunday evening (before everything had been completely tallied), the contribution of PAIZO STAFF, VOLUNTEERS, AND THE PAIZO TABLETOP PLAYERS donations for the GARYCON CHARITY FUNDRAISER hovered just a hair under TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS! Also a special shoutout also to artist CHARLES URBACH whose sneak preview auction of three prints of the GARYCON XI ART generated more than ONE-THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS, and finally LUKE GYGAX who donated a d20 that had been given to him by GARY (One of Gary’s d20’s) for the auction. That d20 from GARY”S PERSONAL COLLECTION yielded TWELVE HUNDRED DOLLARS for our WOUNDED WARRIORS! WAY TO GO!!, WAY TO GO!!!, GARYCON GAMERS & COLLECTORS!!! THANK YOU!

Now I remember that last thing I wanted to ask other staff at GaryCon HQ before I departed. You all remember that dice bag, ...(cough) Cliff’s dice Bag (/cough), …that one was used to hold all the dice during the charity auction?, …the one that the bidder for Gary’s d20 actually did give back, …did Cliff ever get his dice bag back? …or should we just be auctioning that off again next year with some else’s Legendary Dice???!!

Stefano Pokorny's Dungeoneering Game!
Stefan Pokorny’s Dungeon Exploration Game!

Stefan Pokorny from Dwarven Forge was also running a blood chilling Friday afternoon game at GaryCon X. He had a player party going through one of his custom made dungeons you know, …and a particularly vicious and brutal dagger wielding Hobbits’s cut the nuts off of some poor Troll who was living down in the dungeon there, …the last everyone saw of that Troll, he was running down the hallway screaming in agony. To bad, that the bulk of the player party had been in that hallway he ran down, …and the Troll flailing, …and kicking around in pain, killed or severely wounded many of the players, …nearly resulting in an entire party TPK. This occurred in the second room of the dungeon…

Battletech Tabletop Game
Battletech!

Anyone happen to know these Legendary Battletech Mech Pilots? Points if you know who they are, …and also, I’ll pay good money if you can tell me who has previously defeated them in combat, which Mechs you’ll most commonly see them fighting in, as well as their house loyalties… inquiring minds want to know…

Gaming Highlights

Just my personal open gaming table pickup games, and such…

Gamma World Pickup Game. (Friday)
No player characters died actually in this game set in the Napa Valley of Northern California, …which is almost unbelievable. I also didn’t get any pictures of this game so …JIM, THAT SO DIDN’T REALLY HAPPEN, …YOU KNOW MOST OR ALL OF THEM …WOULD HAVE DIED!!!

Classic Traveller Pickup Game. (Saturday)
Three Player Game, Boosted to an eight player game, after one of the three original players (Thank you, Michael Lingefelt) decided that he liked the setup and the scenario so much, that he just wanted to GM the Traveller pickup game for another entire time slot just so the game could continue with the story arc we had generated on-the-fly. He picked up an additional five players, including three people who had never played Traveller before. For the basic scenario, I told the players to envision that mining colony where SEAN CONNERY was sent to in the movie OUTLAND, Only this was staged on a dual asteroid colony in orbit around a super advanced high-tech planet. All of the players rolled up completely new characters, and I’ll be printing a pdf of this adventure as a free download which will be featured in another article here before too long. Also we decided to form the New Travellers Aid Society (NTAS) to promote the Traveller RPG Game in all of its forms!

Napoleonics Game (Saturday Night, after the Volunteer Shift)
Was rolling around and taking pix, and was invited by David Wesely to play one of his Napoleonics scenarios, and spent a very enjoyable evening as the French Commander trying to take a Spanish village away from the Spanish Player during the Peninsular campaign of 1709. Had the company of Ross Maker as Referee, R. Megarry as Spanish Heavy Infantry Commander, M (anonymous) …who currently is working on creating that The Secrets of Blackmoor video, Robin, and one other guy whose name I didn’t quite catch, and we spent about three hours working at taking a bridge and village from David. We had a pleasant evening chatting about all sorts of subjects, …also and including the qualities, preferences, and eccentricities of various Napoleonic Era, Civil War Era, and Revolutionary War era Generals.

Original D&D Pickup Game (Sunday)
Seven Players, with one dropping early, and one joining us later for a total of eight. This was a Judges Guild Wilderlands Campaign game set in Barbarian Altanis. The Players all rolled up new characters, and we had two Players that had never played original D&D. I knew it was going to be an interesting game when one of the original players rolled up a Hobbit that he named which ryhmed with Bilbo only, replace the letter B with the letter D, and there you have it!, as well as his partner who rolled up an Elf character named Milo.

For those of you that don’t know, …these two characters were featured in a Lord of the Rings Satire & Parody book titled Bored of the Rings. …Ahh …yes, we had a few laughs, and the game naturally started in an Inn… Not just any Inn, but a fancy Brick Inn & Tavern and they all drank a few ales, and we got the game underway as “The Locksmith” sent up rounds of ale to various Inn guests upstairs! Cue up some additional comedy such as both party thieves sleeping soundly through multiple night-time encounters, and two hunting expeditions gone awry resulting in accidentally injuries to three party members caused by the noise and smoke of Arquebus’s, and there you have it, Four hours of awesome D&D gaming that slipped by so fast it was time to pack up, after traveling the Old South Road towards Onhir for less than three days game time.

Pretty sure Chgowiz did show up at GaryCon this year…. At least this Chgowiz Doppler showed up in a photograph with Larry Hamilton in the Saturday Night AD&D round down in the Forum… meant to hook up with you guys for the Chaos Wars gaming round, …so much to see & do, so little time! GaryCon. I did find Mike Mornard, and bought him a beer, and met his lovely wife, Jean. Cheers, and I’ll catch up with you at Origins in June perhaps, as I’ll be taking my son, so he can GM at a Convention for the first time. Trail of Cthulu for a Saturday game slot at Origins 2018.

Four days of very awesome gaming! Actually, much better than awesome!… More of this will be covered in some later articles, however wanted to get all of the highlights displayed here before retiring, this first day after the show.

  1. “All of the pre-registered games were booked solid this year.” Not true; there were games that no one at all signed up for. There was also a lot of games that were fully booked, but then had 1-4 no-shows, which happened in every game I played over all four days.

    1. Thank you for letting me know that! I have corrected this article and all the games that I was interested in playing were booked solid with no available tickets. We did have some issues with folks on the East Coast that were snowed in, and unable to make the show with the late winter storm. Concering pre-reg, and no-shows, any suggestions on how to actually improve the drop rate?

      1. I don’t know if we can improve the drop rate. The real issue is that players on wait lists might not have known to come and check for open spots, as they were not expecting such a high drop rate. Educating people of this through your blog is a good step, so thanks.
